About Us

Prep Montessori Academy is a private school located in Garland, Texas. We serve children ages 6 weeks-elementary in the Garland, Richardson, Addison, Dallas and surrounding areas.

Our Mission

Our mission at Prep Montessori Academy is to prepare children to become the confident, independent adults of tomorrow by fostering a lifelong love of learning, exploration and an unquenchable desire for knowledge.

What is the Montessori method?

The Montessori method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a unique, scientific approach to education based on decades of observations of children and their inherent developmental needs from ages birth through adulthood. Dr. Montessori devoted her life to determining the needs of children within each stage of development and thoughtfully prepared environments designed to meet those needs. The results of her efforts produce joyful learners who have a solid foundation for creative and lifelong learning. Montessori classrooms are designed to foster independence through self-directed activities, hands on learning and collaborative, purposeful play. The environments are beautiful, orderly, filled with natural light, inviting and designed to feed a child’s innate curiosity through self- discovery.

Curriculum

  • Montessori work: Children work with their Montessori materials every day and receive guidance from teachers to create an environment of active learning suited for each child’s individual learning path.
  • STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, math) is an ingrained part of our curriculum and naturally helps children through curiosity and interests. Through various hands on activities children are able to satisfy their needs for mind, body and soul.
  • DRAMA: As part of our performing arts segment, children create short plays based on story books such as three little pigs or they may create a show on the solar system. Parents are invited to see them perform and encourage their talent.
  • READING: We are strong supporters of reading. As an ongoing effort, teachers start reading to and with children from the beginning. At preschool level, we have one on one or small group reading with the teacher.
  • Character Education: We believe character education is the basis for personal growth and the bedrock relationships are built on. Developing a respectful and responsible character is a skill that every child must learn at a very young age in order to be a successful citizen of the society. As part of our curriculum, students are guided towards situations where they have to make decisions that will be beneficial to them and their peers/community. They are reminded everyday of their duties and roles as citizens of a community and the world.
  • TEKS: We are mindful of Texas standards for public schools and design our learning path in accordance to that.
  • Physical activities: such as yoga and stretching regularly benefits children with flexibility, balance and coordination. It also awakens their mindfulness and develops focus and concentration.
  • Extracurricular activities: Besides already incorporated activities, parents have the opportunity to enroll their children in optional activities such as soccer, music, dance, gymnastics, etc.

  • LOVE and RESPECT for all is the spirit around our school. Children in our care feel and know that they are loved by everyone and they need to do the same to keep spreading the love bug. Positive guidance is used to model empathy and resolving conflicts.
  • We are continuously learning new things and growing every day. We learn from everyone and our biggest teachers are children.
  • All who enter our school become family. Teachers work vigorously day in and day out and deserve respect and recognition not only from their peers but also from parents. We respect our teachers and salute them for their hard work. We have zero tolerance for disrespect for anyone, whether its children, staff or parents and believe in resolving issues, not making them bigger. Schools are community efforts and thrive on support and well wishes from parents, guardians, and the community.

Admissions process

  1. Please call or email to schedule a tour.
  2. Parents will be given an enrollment packet during the tour.
  3. Fill out required paperwork contained in enrollment packet and return it to the office.
  4. Parents will receive an enrollment decision.
  5. Waiting list information will be provided if needed.

We are now open again but operating at less than 25% capacity to prioritize safety. We are following the below procedures recommended by Texas and CDC to keep children and staff safe during COVID 19.

  • Our staff has undergone additional training on how to handle issues related to COVID 19
  • Staff and children will be screened every day for temperature that is less than 100.4 and signs for any illness before they enter the building
  • Pickup/drop off will be outside the school entrance door
  • HEPA air purifiers have been placed in the classrooms and common areas
  • Social distancing of 6ft apart will be maintained as much as possible. If such distancing is not always feasible, other measures such as face shields, face covering, hand hygiene, cough etiquette, cleanliness, and sanitation will be rigorously practiced
  • School to be run at 25% capacity to enable distancing
  • Maximize time outdoors with outdoor classroom and learning
  • Cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing all areas of the school at the end of the day has been our practice already. We will increase the frequency and vigor
  • In an event, someone starts to display symptoms, they will be isolated. CDC guidance will be followed to disinfect and sanitize. If a COVID 19 case was confirmed, additional measures will be taken depending on the exact situation

Infant (ages 6 weeks-18 months)

Little children, from the moment they are weaned, are making their way towards independence.-Maria Montessori

The infant program is designed to build a sense of trust and security for both parents and children. This is a very delicate age and the first experience of parent and child leaving the nest and being separated. As such, the enviroment is warm, loving, peaceful, beautiful, simple, orderly and meticulously maintained from floor to ceiling.

This program fosters great attention to each child’s care by offering:

  • a low child to teacher ratio (5:1)
  • consistent caregivers and structured routine
  • individual sleeping & feeding schedules
  • daily reports outlining the number of feedings, soiled diapers, periods of rest, socialization and milestones
  • frequent home to school ongoing communication
  • sterile enviroment to reduce germ exposure
  • frequent interactions between caregivers and infants to build rapport and trust
  • age appropriate materials varying in texture, size, shape, height to stimulate brain development
  • freedom of movement and tummy time
  • opportunities and encouragement for self-feeding

During this short period of time, the infant moves towards becoming more cognizant, attentive, responsive, communicative, mobile and independent. After meeting specific milestones, he crosses the bridge to the toddler area where a whole new world is awaiting to meet his changing needs.

Primary (ages 3 years-6 years)

He is now ready to move on to the primary area where the next set of challenges await him. The primary years focus on the development of a sense of order, extended periods of concentration, coordination and a deeper sense of independence. This enviroment is comprised of defined areas intended to meet the needs in this next stage of development by offering:

  • individualized lessons and work plans customized to child’s learning style
  • consistent caregivers and structured routine
  • freedom of choice for optimal learning opportunities
  • multi-aged classrooms offering role models for younger children and leadership responsibilities for older children
  • opportunities for self-paced learning and skill building
  • sequential order of lessons built on previously acquired knowledge
  • opportunities for self-expression though music and art
  • development of presentation skills through group activities such as "show and tell"
  • freedom of time to repeat and master skills
  • multi-modality engagement (auditory, visual, kina)

A primary class is comprised of 5 key areas of learning:

  1. Practical Life includes life skills to foster the development of independence, coordination, concentration, self-discipline , self-awareness, and confidence. They include Care of Self : food preparation, grooming, dressing Care of Enviroment: cleaning, care of plants , flower arranging, gardening Grace & Courtesy: manners, social appropriateness Control of Movement: (walking around work, rolling a mat, moving with purpose
  2. Sensorial allows children to refine their senses and discriminate , order and classify materials through the five senses (touch, sight, smell, taste and sound)
  3. Language is based on phonetic awareness. Children work with hands on materials that to guide them in the mastery of sounds, blending of sounds and sight words. The guide presents isolated skills in a sequential order that cultivates a string foundation for reading and comprehension necessary for higher learning.

  5. Mathematics is developed using concrete materials (beads, rods, number chains) to bring abstraction to life. Through the tactile materials, children develop a profound understanding of concepts and a solid foundation necessary for more advanced disciplines.
  6. Cultural allows the children to explore the natural world around them. This area integrates geography, zoology, botany, history, and science.

Toddler (18 months-age 3 )

The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child’s own natural desire to learn--Maria Montessori

At this age, the child is mobile, on the go and eager to continue to build his gross motor skills, communication skills, social skills and independence. The enviroment is purposely designed to meet those necessities by offering:

  • a very rigid, structured routine to reduce anxiety
  • age mixed classrooms with older and younger peers
  • specially prepared, child sized materials fostering an “I can do it!”, confident mindset
  • child sized (mini) tables, chairs and shelves facilitating independence
  • educational materials that encourage self-discovery and exploration
  • experimentation with art (play dough, crayons, paint, tearing, cutting)
  • a multitude of daily social interactions modeling appropriate choices
  • consistent opportunies to develop communication skills and language acquisition
  • practical life exercises that nurture independence, concentration, coordination and a sense of order
  • introduction to chores to foster a care of the enviroment, consideration of others and order (everything has a place)
  • opportunies for frequent socialization and expression of feelings
  • learning empathy and to recognize the feelings of others through expression
  • group activities (Music, outdoor play) that strengthen coordination and balance skills
  • introduction to life skills such as self-feeding, food preparation, dish washing, sweeping, mopping, window washing, cleaning up, hand washing, dressing and undressing, nose blowing, sharing the attention of an adult, sharing work, self-soothing rest and toilet training

During the toddler years, the child has solidified his mobility, developed language, greater independence, social skills, confidence, a longer attention span, and a better understanding of the world in which he lives.
